What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

We all have dreams and visions of who and what we want to be.  Many of us get sidetracked because we are focused on a specific occupation or vocation (i.e., doctor, lawyer, firefighter, teacher, etc.) instead of on finding our natural abilities or talents.

What if we turned things around and focused on discovering our natural talents and then looked at the occupations that filled the requirements of our gifts?

My bet is that we would be much more happy pursuing our purpose when we had first aligned it with our natural abilities.

My friend Sherrie Koretke is a coach and blogger at The Niche Clarity Coach. She has been publishing a WONDERFUL series of articles on “natural gifts”.  You should read them all.  They will give you insight into yourself.  I have listed each post here below so you can find them easily.

Were You Born to Teach?
Were You Born to Lead?
Were You Born to Inspire?
Were You Born to Empower?
Were You Born To Motivate?
Were You Born to Dispense Joy?
Were You Born to Heal?

Did you see yourself in Sherrie’s posts?  What are your gifts?  Does your current occupation make use of these gifts? Share your thoughts and insights here in the comments. I look forward to the great discussion.

Thanks a lot, i’m still pretty young so maybe i could change my life or at least help someone to change his way! ;d

There is always time to change your life…even if you’re not young! :) It is helpful to be able to impact the lives of others. It’s what living is all about.

I appreciate you commenting here, Jane. It means alot to me.

This is so excellent Steve. And I really believe this is the model of the future, both for education and the workforce. The old industrial model is dying – people getting stuck in a nice, secure job for 50 years and then retiring beaten and destroyed. Kids learn best when they’re passionate about their subject. Adults are at their most creative and productive when they’re following their dreams.
When I was in school, they performed aptitude tests. They should be performing passion tests, really. :)

Melody, thanks for stopping by KK! Really appreciate your input. (I can’t wait to jump over to your site as your “most recent post” title has me buzzing with anticipation) But first respond to your comment! :)

I took the old aptitude tests in school too! I recently had the same thought as you, what if I had been tested on my passions and given training on how to develop my innate abilities and talents in order to apply them to connect with others? How would life be different then?

Hope you have a great day.

Love it!!! Knowing our gifts as a precursor to choosing a career- you’re being mavericky again!! LOL!! :-)

haha…it’s not me…it’s Sherrie. She’s a great blogger and very intuitive too.

I love the idea of passion tests!
I think I am a mix of a few categories (but definitely not teaching or leading).
It’s interesting–I would never in a million years have labeled myself a “motivator,” but you and Sherrie have me thinking now… :)

    • http://www.StevenERice.com Steve

That’s so wonderful, Amy! I found myself a bit surprised when I read these posts. I generally don’t like to “lift” other people’s content, but it was just so good that I had to share with my readers. So I told Sherrie I’d be doing this post. It’s such great material. Glad you found it as useful as I’d hoped.

        Hi Amy,

I need to hurry and finish up this series! There are a few missing still. Maybe one of the others will fit as well.

Oh, Sherrie, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize that it wasn’t finished. I will be sure to add the links of future installments so that the entire series is posted.

Steve, don’t even worry about it. I love that you started some buzz about it. That would be great if you amended the article when it’s done. I have about three or four left. Thanks again!

I definitely will add the consequent posts. I’m thankful to create “buzz.” Your materials have been so clarifying for me as I’m establishing my speaking and writing career that I want all my readers to have the benefit or exposure to your series.

That’s so great! I’m glad that it has been helpful to you. When things kinda balance from my book launch, I may look into it. I know it would really be of help for me.

This has been a debate everywhere; do you want to be what you want to be, or do you want to be what your parent want you to be?

For me, you should consider your passion first before deciding which vocation you want to take.

    • http://www.StevenERice.com Steve

that’s great insight, Maxine. Thanks for stopping by the KK blog to contribute. You are right, many of us struggle with what our family, friends or cultures think we should be instead of what our passion tells us. It is useful to clearly identify our passion before deciding on a vocation!

This is an amazing series! I need to spend more time with them, too. I already see that I use many of my “natural gifts” in what I do but now I can find out what to do in order to be more fulfilled with it all. Thanks so much for this!

I know, Maria…Sherrie did a great job with them, Maria. She just posted the “Joy” one and has a couple more to go. I’ll be adding them to this post as she publishes them.

I hope you’re doing well, my friend.

Living a happy life means living the things really want; it is a matter of satisfaction. Pursuing your dreams is easier said than done. You have to take every risk along the way with all of your courage. Real success depends on how great you did while making things happen.
