Power of Peace

(This is the second in a 3-part series of post on the Power of Personal Awareness.)

The 3 Powers of Personal Awareness:

  1. The Power of Response-ability
  2. The Power of Clarity
  3. The Power of Peace

Each of these are personal powers that come to us when we embrace personal awareness, which is essentially the power of observation without emotional engagement.

peace characterThe Power of Peace

Everyone wants a more peaceful life. Why don’t we have what we desire?

Peace, like clarity, comes from stillness. Peace-fullness is something we are, not something we do. We are conditioned to make everything a task. It is impossible to “do” peacefulness.

Peacefulness is a result of awareness. The power of peacefulness lies in the clarity that comes with it.

The Power of Peace is the power that allows you to be calm when the storm of life hits. When everyone around you is running around crazy, out of their minds, and engaged in the drama of the unforeseen situation, you will feel calm when you have engaged awareness.

It is slightly surreal. People may think that you are cold and unfeeling because of your lack of external reaction. Do not let this opinion guilt or sway you.

The opposite is true. You have more clarity and more focus. Your strength is expanded as you exercise peacefulness because you will be able to be not only the observer, but the decider. You will make better choices, decision and observations from the center of peace.

    Hi Steve,

    Excellent insight here.

Peace is something which comes from being. Like you said, you can’t do peace. Simply be with whatever happens on the outside, and adopting this frame of mind comes with greater ease when you sit for extended periods.

I just spent a few hours in a local city here in NJ. 99% of the people were moving 100 MPH, or faster. I felt the urge to do so too, but I watched most of it. Life is more enjoyable when you’re just observing, don’t you think?

    Thanks for sharing!

You’re absolutely right, Ryan. Life is more enjoyable when you’re observing (instead of engaging the drama). I’m excited for you and your move to bali. I look forward to the great insights and adventures waiting for you.

I think that word you chose is the right one: power.

To be calm in the middle of the storm is not only “cool”. It gives you control (aka power).

The storm can be a terrible lost, a divorce, loosing your job, a deadly accident. To be able to male better choices (as you mentioned) makes all the difference in the world.

It’s so weird for me to think of “power” and “peace” together in a phrase, but when you describe peace as “engaged awareness,” it seems to make sense. Peace has always been a feeling of inherent positivity for me, so it’s also interesting to think that others can misinterpret my peacefulness. Great insights here, Steve. Thanks for this post. =)

Thanks for your input, Samantha. I can understand your perspective. It does seem to be a paradox to draw a correlation between power and peace. We tend to think of “powerful” people as aggressive or pushy. However, when I talk about personal power, I’m referring to that knowing deep within the person that allows one to make decisions and act with surety, in spite of what others are saying. I appreciate your contribution here.

I picked up a valuable piece of advice here – being still and focused in the midst of a storm may come across as being ‘cold’ but it pays to not get deterred.

Thanks man, I usually want to please; will remember today’s takeaway.

I’m the same way, Stella. I like everyone to be happy, but I have realized that stillness feels like separation from the drama and chaos that’s going on around us.

Most of us are used to all that intense negative energy, so when we see someone who is not reacting impulsively, we may assume that they are “cold” or unfeeling. The challenge for me is to convey my empathy with what the person is experiencing, while silently showing them there is another way through my actions and a calm demeanor.

And peacefulness actually increases productivity. When we’re agitated we tend to make mistakes more often, we skip certain steps to hurry to the end. Being calm about it will only leave a false impression that it takes longer to do that thing, but if you remove the errors it actually takes less time.

That’s a great point that I hadn’t thought of, Maria. Being able to calm one’s self produces greater efficacy.

    Hi Steve,

For a busy-body like me, being peaceful doesn’t come easy. I almost have to force myself to sit still for 10 minutes and during that whole time I’m antsy to get up and do something. But like you mentioned you have to be still to focus.

I envy those who can sit down and meditate. Guess that’s something I still have to learn somehow.

    I really enjoyed your post!

    Hey Steve,

You’re sharing great insights here. This sums it all: “The Power of Peace is the power that allows you to be calm when the storm of life hits.”

When you’re calm, you’re in complete control, right?

    Thanks for sharing your insights.

    All the best,

You know, Steve, a peaceful life is a dream, it’s not meant to be touched, just aspired towards.
All i keep thinking at work is going fishing for a few weeks. Just me and the lake, no phones, no cars, no city. But once i get there and fish for 3-4 days i wanna kill myself from the boredom. Too much peace is bad for your mental health :)

I love your perspective “Too much peace is bad for your mental health” This made me laugh. I understand what you’re saying completely. We, as human beings, definitely need variety. How we experience and define peace is the key, I think.

Indeed true! Peace does come from stillness and not from running here and there in order to get your jobs done. What we all basically need is some time to waive everything else in this world off, and then just be ourselves with ourselves.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, James! I love the comment you make “just be ourselves with ourselves”. I had to learn how to be comfortable with myself and it was a tough lesson to learn, but it’s SO worthwhile!

      • http://www.homeremodeling101.org/ James Foster

It has been a tough lesson, not just for me but I guess for every other guy standing out there. The way to be happy with yourself is a very tough one indeed, yet at last it comes as a survival skill for yourself.

being happy with one’s self is really tough. You’re right. But getting to that place is really worthwhile.
