I Wanna Be The Guy…

Backlogged

This evening, I logged in to Google Reader and found 246 articles waiting for me.  So I dove right in.

Now, (nearly 3 hours later), I’m taking a break to write this post.

About half an hour ago, I quit reading (with nearly 100 posts still to wade through) and started skimming…or more accurately, “page-downing” (the act of pressing the “page dn” button, scanning the headlines and repeating).  I still have 48 articles to page-down through.

Why am I doing this? I wondered. Why am I even reading these blogs at all?

Those two questions granted me a moment of lucidity, and I realized that I am tired.

I’m Tired

I am tired of reading about “tricks” and “tips” for better blogging.

I am tired of learning “how-to” get a job/follow a dream/build a brand.

I am tired of reading about what it is like to be someone else or do business like someone else does business.

What I Want…

I want to learn about how I do business.

I want to learn about how I connect to my readers.

I want to focus on being true.

I want to learn to better compete with me and let all the others watch.

I want to be the guy whose work is backlogged in someone else’s Google Reader when they realize that all they need is already within them and that they can launch out into the deep and do their own thing.

What about you?

So Ignore Me, and Do your own thing!

    Steven:
This is exactly the point.  It seems that everyone is now writing a blog, saying the same thing everyone else is. (Some are even copying what others write and posting it…)

We’ve already seen the average. We seek the nuggets of gold, those items that will make us sit back and recognize that change and improvement will result from this knowledge.

That is the challenge, I find, Roy….to say something unique…or at least from a unique perspective.

It’s really a matter of discipline and hard work because saying something unique or in a unique way requires thought…which requires work.

    Hi Steve,

Wow, I’m just as guilty wading through my backlog and ignoring quite a bit of them. Oh sure, I know that people want to learn some of the things that are written and I do want to support my blogging buddies but sometimes I’m up to my ears in way too many posts to go through so a decision has to be made.

I too would much prefer learning how to do something instead of the latest and greatest new site or the best tool on the market. Yeah, yeah, yeah I already know about this stuff.

I have a feeling you are saying what a lot of others are thinking so I applaud you for that! Keep up the great work.

What I really meant to say is that I wouldn’t mind my blog post getting ignored if it meant that the person ignoring it was living well and doing what they were meant to do! :)

Yep, completely agree. That’s why I decided to do a slight change. When I didn’t like what I was saying or what I think I SHOULD have been saying I knew it was time to step up to the next level.

I love this, Sherrie.  I’m so glad you recognized the time to make a change and are taking those steps.  Awesome!

Preach it!  I’m in serious info-overload-mode right now, particularly with the biz advice.  A person can only handle so much input!

I handle the Reader backlog by only subscribing to a small amount of very awesome, very focused blogs.  That way I’m not wading through bullshit that I’m not actually reading, and it doesn’t build up.  Cutting to less than 50 subscriptions made my life a whole lot less stressful.

As for my own work, I like to imagine that I’m unique enough in my style and approach that I don’t get tossed out in the page-downing, but only other people can tell me that for sure.  The only thing I can do is to make sure I’m turning out my best work all the time – the rest is up to my audience.

Maybe I need to follow your lead, Ellie.  I need to cut back my subscriptions like you did.

I think you’re right…it’s about producing great work that honors ourselves.  A lot of people won’t (or don’t wan to) do the work.

One challenge for many of us is the “expert” syndrome. Your belief in yourself and your belief in what you do is critical. Next you just have to either become a shameless promoter or trust that with the groups you belong to you will be the teacher others are looking for as they find empty promises from so many. Its also in who knows you. Keep the faith and keep the good work up Steve. you are making an impact

Thanks so much for your kind words, Roberta.  I appreciate it.

Me?  I want the brainpower to remember things, to retain focus and interest in what I read and do.  The direction to know where I want and need to go (personally as well as professionally…but particularly the latter in regard to this post).  The ability to make clear to others just how much I am willing to tolerate and/or compromise.  And the wherewithal to make it all happen!  I don’t think I could sit and read posts for three hours — you are a machine (in a good way)!!

    • http://www.KarmicKappuccino.com Steve Rice

Thanks so much! :)  I know that your determination and direction will help you to achieve your goals.  It is a challenge to stay focused, however.

Nicely said. I admire you for even trying to get through all of those posts. And I admire your wise words about finding what’s true to you. Makes me even more appreciative to read your comments on my posts!

Haha….Brandi.  It was mostly habit when I started waded through them all…until I realized how stressed it made me.  Finally it made me “wake up” and realize I was “hiding” behind a task instead of focusing on creating.

Interesting Steve! I’ve been wondering the same thing about blogging. I wonder how many activities we do on a daily basis are just a way of us hiding instead of creating?

        • http://www.KarmicKappuccino.com Steve Rice

Gosh…thanks for the awesome mention in your new post, Brandi…This truth of your comment “I wonder how many activities we do…that are just a way of us hiding instead of creating?” is even MORE pertinent to me in the last few weeks.  Great stuff.  Glad you’re committed to creating. You inspire me.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt! I haven’t even looked at google reader since the Summer! I don’t even want to know what’s awaiting me…

    • http://www.KarmicKappuccino.com Steve Rice

Haha…I know the feeling, Stacy.  I was the same way…I quit using Google Reader because I was so overwhelmed.  Now I use it as a tool.

You took the thought right out of my head there, Steve. :D

I have been in this mindset all week long. At times my Google Reader leads me to wonder if it’s all even worth it? And if it is worth it, what’s the pay off; what price will I seriously pay if it does or doesn’t happen to get to every single post in my reader? I’m one of those type of people that believe that what’s mine is already mine to have, but I also believe that I will not attain it unless I put forth the action it’ll take in order for me to acquire it.

So now, how I’ve chosen to look at it is as such; I can only do what I can humanely do without causing any unnecessary mental or physical anguish. Those things I can do; I should do with passion and try my best to get them done. Those things that I can’t get to in a day’s passing; I should do my best to finish them, but if it doesn’t happen in my timing, I should leave room for error.

We are, after all, human beings first, not machines or Apps appropriately known as plugins. ;)

That’s a sane way to look at it, Deeone.  You can only do (and should only do) what you you can do.  That dials down the stress significantly, doesn’t it?

So I’m not the only- good!!!  I can get overwhelmed thinking that I haven’t gotten to every single article. At some point, we have to stop reading about it and just do it. I sometimes want to read as much as I can before I start just taking steps based on what I’ve already digested.

    • http://www.KarmicKappuccino.com Steve Rice

haha…nope, you’re not the only one, Earl.  :)  You’re right…sometimes the time comes to just “do it”  So glad you’re on this same path.  :)
